Is your hospital ready for the next Wildfire? Did your facility develop a Smoke Readiness Plan? Have you communicated this plan to your O&M personnel, to employees and to the design team for a new facility? Do you know that the most “smellable” component in wildfire smoke (i.e., gaseous VOCs) is not the most dangerous one which is the Particulate Matter PM2.5 that can penetrate deep into the human lungs. Do you know that there are two key concepts to mitigate wildfire smoke: 1) Preventing smoke from getting indoors and 2) Removing smoke contaminants that get indoors. Are you and your facility ready for this? Have you thought about the impact wildfire smoke will have on other non-HVAC filters in your hospitals? (Hint: think about the NICU incubators' filters!)  If you want to learn the answers to these and more, join me for my educational session at the 14th Annual Northern California Seminar being hosted by California Society for Healthcare Engineering, Inc. (CSHE) on Friday, October 20th. This year’s Seminar will be focused on Disaster Preparedness. If you are unable to attend and would like to learn more, feel freer to reach out to me!
